Excal as "All purpose"

So it's been quite awhile since I've looked into detcting again. This time it will be a "full time" venture. I've always intended to own a Minelab, so my mind's stuck there.

I plan to be PADI certified shortly, so the most obvious choice is the Excall II, however my main curiousity has been it's usefulness on land. Not just sandy beaches, were talking plantations, fields, far in the woods (where it's waterproof advantage would allow for creek/river/lake/pond searches as well).

So I'd mainly like to hear of experiences regarding it outside of beaches and much more inland. Preferably around old buildings, maybe construction sites, battlefields, whatever.

It's the same as Sovereign so yes it does fine on land, and I had a friend use one for a few years, and mostly that way. The one thing you have to do is try it to see if you can handle the balance and the weight. I found it a very awkward detector for the minute I used one.

If you get a straight shaft then the Excalibur becomes one beautiful thing to swing. Very light and very easy to swing.

I use only the Excalibur since selling my E-trac and found that the Excalibur is one of the best sound detectors out. I hated the E-trac because I was always tempted to go near the water with it. Getting it dunked was always on my mind and I decided to make the Excalibur the main detector. You just can't beat a great amphibious detector and the Excalibur is that and more.

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

I've used the Excal for diving and wading. For wading I hang it from my neck to save more weight off the arm and it is great for hours at a time.
However for land hunting off the sand I prefer the Sov GT over the Excal because you can change coils to allow for different areas.
Use of premium head phones like my Black Widows which allow me to hear the faintest whispers which the Excal's water phones won't.
The Sov GT allows the use of a meter and a Sunray inline probe which the Excal won't.
With the Sov GT, you can turn Iron Mask on or off and other features the Excal doesn't have.
The Sov GT is cheaper if you are going to stay out of the water and is excellent on the wet and dry sand!

A golfer has many clubs in his bag for different shots and you should have the most adaptable detector if you are going to carry only one at a time.

Sorry to steal the thread but where did you get the battery pak from sandman? as I have been searching for one with no luck. Thanks marchas45

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

I got the pack from my dealer years ago and don't think Sunray has them any more. A charge lasts a few days of steady detection. I think it is 1600 AMH or something like that. I worked there and they paid me yet. They didn't know I'd work there for free.

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

Since moving from Hawaii, my Excal has just been hanging in the garage. I think its time to revive it and get in the dirt instead of the sand it was used to. The only issue is having to relearn the sounds it makes...its been a couple of years.

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

Sandman,

I'm looking for a good used Excal. if you know anyone that has one. How have you been?

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

Joe, I sent you an email. :hello:

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

Well, ordered one the other day as it looked like it was beginning to warm up finally. Kellyco is completely out of stock of them unfortunately. :-\

Guess I'll wait a bit longer.

Re: Excal as "All purpose"

Hello Sandman...thanks for posting the picture of your modified Excal. I used some of my military gear I dont use anymore and made a nice chest mount for my Excal. Its almost identical to your setup except I can clip mine from both ends of the pvc pipe I used.
