excal acting funny in springs/sinkholes.

Hi all, this is my first post here. I have an excal, about a year and a half old. I used it wading in salt water on CT beaches, on land and freshwater in CT, and wading at the beach here in Crystal River, FL, and had no problems with it.

I finally got a chance to take it diving, in two springs around Crystal River, and one sinkhole a little south of there.

The problem: When diving, the threshold will not remain stable. The only way I've been able to use it so far diving is in pinpoint. What I don't know is if there is so much mineralization in springs and sinks that the machine can't handle it; or, if there is something wrong with the machine that it needs to be looked at.

I also just realized maybe it is because of using the shorter shaft...i.e. the lead weight and metal on my BC interfering.

When in the water, i have the machine set in Disc, Sensitivity in Auto, Volume at Max, and Threshold at barely audible.

I would love to hear any input.

Thanks a ton,
Chris

Welcome Chris.

I'm not a diver, and at first I thought maby you got water in it.
However after tou mentioned your Weights, I'm satarting to lean towards that being the problem.

How far away from the coil are these ?

Are you using a straight/balanced shaft? I was told that the short dive shaft will not work on them. Don't know if it's true or not ???

Chris welcome aboard.
You say you have your sensitivity on auto, turn it to off auto and turn your sensitivity down. When you are diving it is hard to keep your coil at an even height off of the bottom and the machine is trying to ground balance itself. If you have it in auto it will be giving you false signals affecting the threshold. By lowering the sensitivity and concentrating on keeping up with smooth even sweeps of the coil the machine should run more smoothly.By running your machine in discriminate, with it set to minimum setting you will detect deeper than in pin point(all metal ).
As you have said your weights and equipment could be contributing to the noise but I have found with mine there are a lot of places where I have trouble running in auto sensitivity and turning it off and running in manual solves the problem, in fact in manual you can acheive more depth by turning it up until you start getting false signals and backing off slowly until the false signals just stop.
I hope I have been of some help good luck seeya Neilo ;D

neilo has hit the nail on the head

N E V E R HUNT IN AUTO - LAND OR SEA

MY EXCALIBUR WORKS GREAT WITH SENSITIVITY AROUND 12 TO 1, BUT WHEN I WORK IN SAY CHEST DEEP WATER...........(MINE IS BELT MOUNTED) I HAVE TO SET THE SENSITIVITY BACK TO AROUND 2

MY 2 CENTS WORTH

I have noticed that with the Fisher impulse...as my depth changes I have to reset the threshold, but that is a PI and not sure about the others with Disc.

Thank you all, I will try your suggestions this weekend and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again,
Chris

Neilo is right! When I first started using the Excal I had the same trouble and turning it off auto solved the problem. This was long ago and I wonder if I'd think of doing that today.
