Ever see a buckle like this?

I found it today in nice loam around six inches down.
I believe it is made of Brass and is around 1.5" x 1.5".
It came from an area that has already this year given some pre and early 1800 coins.
Any idea on the use or age?

Looks like a buckle for some kind of tiedown. A lock or pin could be inserted through the loop on the "tongue" or whatever it's called to secure it and keep it from slipping. Monty
