I know a lot of those coins were really really weakly struck. I'm seeing 1954 S nickels up for around 200$-500$ on ebay...not sold of course.
They just seem really really hard to find. I pulled a 1947 nickel from my local coin store from one of the ignorant coin people who work there for .50 cents...all I asked was how much he wanted and he gave me that price. It's 5+ full steps, not that much shining luster but it's still a good coin.
Also pulled a 1952 nickel for .50 that was UNC. Not full steps but nice coin.
