Evening hunt , 3 silver finds , rings 68 & 69

My Wife and Daughter were out for the evening so my Son Carson and I grabbed the detectors and went to a local school . We had never hunted the middle of the school witch is all grass , so we thought we would give it a try . WOW , was it loaded ! In only two hours Carson found $4.15 and I found $17.19 !!! This is just one small area . I found three piece of silver , two rings and a small Mother Mary pendent . The silver band is a 1964 Washington quarter . It was just laying in the grass ! The other ring was about 4 inches and bent , but I'll take it ! Rings are numbers 68 & 69 for the year .
I'll be hunting it again tomorrow morning , can't wait .
HH
Glen

Ok, here is how you straighten out that sweet turquoise ring: Get a fingernail polish bottle with a tapered top. Slip it over it and usually you can just press on it and it will straighten up nicely. If it is needs a little more, take a leather, plastic, or some other "soft" hammer, or make a cushion for a regular hammer, and tap it GENTLY. Doesn't take much. If this doesn't work, take it to your friendly small store jeweler (Zales is not the one) and ask him to put it on his mandrel. He will take a leather hammer and gently tap the shank until it is straight. If he charges you, never buy anything from him again. It will take all of 30 seconds to make that quite presentable. Good luck, and let's see it on your spokesmodel hand soon.

PS You may want that jeweler to put a stone in that next gold ring you find. Mention that.

Glen, you and your son are reaping good benefits from your persistence! Way to go!

And High Plains Digger, thanks for the tips on straightening slender silver rings. I have two rings to straighten and will now use your tapered nail polish top method plus soft hammer if needed, as I no longer take jewelry classes where we had access to mandrels. Andi

Thanks Dave !
I thought for sure Carson would find a ring . We were going to go this morning but it is raining in June in San Jose , California !!!!
Already a 1/2 inch over night , it should be 85 degrees right now ???

Bummer that the shank is broken. And with that kind of setting and that kind of stone, it is impossible to fix. Alternative idea: If you want to use it as a pendant, someone with some talent, not necessarily a jeweler, can bend the shank around in an artful manner to make a bail for the chain to go through. I guess it depends on how much one wants to wear it.

I hear you buddy! The ground here is still saturated from the winter snow and the heavy spring rains that we've had having lately! But I do get better depth with my Ace 350 in the wet ground, so I can't complain too much! :laughing7:

Take care man,
Dave
