Just wanted to invite artifact collectors to my late Father’s Estate Auction coming on the weekend of May 4[SUP]th[/SUP], 2019 at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Lakeville, Minnesota. There will be a PREVIEW on Friday, May 3rd from 4pm - 8pm, and Saturaday, May 4th from 8am - 9am. AUCTION BEGINS AT 9AM ON SATURDAY, MAY 4th . The artifacts were found, preserved, and passed down multiple generations from my late Grandparents, Howard & Kathryn Loitwood of Gettysburg, SD. It is believed that this could be the largest auction of Native American Artifacts in history in the United States, with over 10,000 artifacts that will be sold. (bids in person/by proxy/on phone only – no internet bidding) My Dad passed away in 2018 and this is part of his estate. The link below includes the auction info and pics of many of the artifacts that will sell. This collection is really special, as most of the artifacts are Arikara, the tribe featured in the 2015 Academy Award Winning Movie “The Revenant”, starring Leonard DiCaprio, based on the true story of Hugh Glass, who was eventually killed by the Arikara. Below is a link to auction (Helbling Auctioneers is handling the sale) with all the information about the auction, as well as pictures of most of the artifacts.

Mel, sorry for the passing of your loved ones. I won't make it to the auction in person unfortunately, but I'll make arrangements to hopefully add some items that will proudly be displayed as being from the Loitwood collection.

It is believed that this could be the largest auction of Native American Artifacts in history in the United States, with over 10,000 artifacts that will be sold.

Kind of pointless trivia, but the Edward Payne collection contained over 2,000,000 items when it went up for sale during the great depression. They sold 13,000 axes during the 4 months they sale was open to the public. Your family's collection could very well be the largest family found collection to come up for auction. The Payne collection was amassed by an army of buyers and an almost bottomless bucket of money at a time when artifacts were cheap.

Before my Dad's passing, he sold a few things here and there to people that had stopped by the family museum, but not much at all. This auction contains all the artifacts that my late Mother (Diana Loitwood-Webb had inherited from her parents, the late Howard & Kathryn Loitwood...it was left to my Dad, Bernie Webb...who passed away on September 11th, 2018...it is his estate auction). My Mom's brother still has a portion of the Loitwood Collection, but his collection is not part of the auction. If you have any more questions, just let me know or feel free to call me.

Wow, you are so right Joshuaream....very interesting! I guess that makes the Loitwood Collection seem small in comparison! Thanks for sharing the info about the Edward Payne collection! The fact that my grandparents spent over 40 years artifacting in central and northcentral south Dakota for these amazing pieces of history is what I really appreciate. They had wonderful relationships with the landowners, the SD State Historical Society, the Smithsonian Instituation, and many others. Thanks again for the history info Joshuaream!

Thanks for clearing that up Mel!
There was a large auction a number of years ago in Sioux Falls from a family in a town up the river a bit from you. I had heard that part of the family didn’t want to sell and kept their share. The families name wasn’t released.

Hopefully the auction went well. I’m sure there are some collectors out there proud to have the chance to own some relics from this wonderful collection.

I attended and picked up a few things.

I can assure you there were many happy collectors. And i’d Venture to say the family did well too.
Quality items bring good money! I met a collector from Indiana, and Michigan. And I am sure there were some from even farther away.

I liked the utube video of the collection and information about the flooding of the river. The maps towards the end showing the different village site locations was very informative also.

That hook brought 850.00. I got to handle it and many other of those fine pieces.
