Errors in modern coinage . . .

Hi,
There's two variations of the error on the Wisconsin quarter. They are only on the Denver mint quarter. They both have an extra leaf on the ear of corn. One is the leaf is up, the other is the leaf is down. They are going for extrodinary amounts on Ebay. Of course, I didn't have one though. Keep sifting.

There's also supposed to be some errors on some of the early state quarters where the reverse is off, but I haven't found one myself. I also haven't heard of anyone finding them either.

How early you want to go back? There's also the 1955 double die lincoln cent.

Hope that helps.

I heard the same thing about the reverse being upside down on the first run quarters. If you flip it end for end the reverse image is upside down. Haven't seen one... Don't know if it's true....Flipped about a million quarters so far! ;D~C02

Keep them coming. I am collaborating a list and will give you my results, After I scorer the internet. And of course report back what I have found in my own "stash".
I guess back to 1955, is modern enough.

richg Have you ever heard of a 1957-d Lincoln d/d?

I do not know of that one right off hand but if it looks like a d over d then it is probably a repunched mint mark. Some can be worth 40-60 depends on grade and condition.

There are die flaws on the Delaware quarter, under the horse's belly raised lines caused by a dirty or cracked die.
Look for that one. I found a die flaw on a 2002 nickel that I posted yesterday. HH Bob.B

There are several d over d errors on wheat cents in the 1950s, as well as certain ones having multiple doubling in other letters. I have had at least 10 different coins, some of which had up to 4 errors on 1 coin. They sell for $10 to $50 depending on the coin.

AQ, good question! What else is out there? Shortly after the Wisconsin quarter thing broke I looked into other flaws, which brought me to search eBay. I'd found not just the (2 or 3) flaws in the Wisconsin quarters but Texas quarters apparently have whats called a "gilligan's island" flaw, but I wasn't able to discern what the flaw was. Also, it seems that there may be a higher occurence of all state quarters to have off-center strikes and coins that that do not have the "clad" on one or both sides that keep them from tarnishing quickly. Now I'm not an expert by any stretch, but rather reporting about coins that I'd seen selling for a premium about a week ago. I hope this helps and definately welcome feedback in either direction of this observation. -Ben

There will be errors on lots of coins due to the fast machines they use. However most are minor flaws that would only bring a couple cents over face value. You really must know what to look for and how to identify it. This thing with the wisconsin state quarters according to ken potter, coin expert from coneca is that those quarters are nothing more than die gouges which caused the coin to look like an extra leaf up or down. He estimates value at around $10. That is his opinion but I think when enough people read his article price will drop significantly and already has started to if you watch the recent ebay auctions. Do Not be fooled by people giving goofy names to something they think is an error and come up with a creative name because it is not worth it. I know people do collect minor errors but it is the uniformed that will overpay by big amounts because they think it is a deal. Good Luck!!
