Error Penny? - It's Big

Have had this a few years after receiving it in change. It's a 1984 Lincoln penny (dark one in pictures) that is noticeable larger than a normal penny. Any ideas on how this could happen? Oh, there are no indications of "squishing"; all of the penny's details appear to be in proportion. Thanks. Big Penny 1.JPGBig Penny 2.JPG

I'd have to guess it's a 'no collar' error. I have a dime larger than usual with no reeding, was told that's what it is...

SHWill is correct. It's a 'no collar error.' When a coin is struck without a collar, the metal expands, thus increases in diameter. Neat find, Breezie

That doesn't explain the larger lettering and memorial. Those should be the same size as a normal penny.

It has been heated to the point where the zinc core begins to melt and spreads out. It is really easy to do.

Agreed, it's probably been in a fire.

FYI, the "no collar" error is commonly called a "broadstrike." If you look in the Red Book you won't find a "no collar" strike error, but you will find a "broadstrike" error.
