I agree mojjax, and didn't wanna say anything because of who is on the coin and what the error looks like.

Had to be someone's sense of Black Humor. However, it does appear erratic and not like a chisel or dremel type of defacing. No repetition that I can see.

Unless it was done with a torch.

Freaky to say the least.

Looks like it could have been a gas bubble that was trapped under the surface. I hear that can happen some times.

I agree on the irony of the situation. COol find.

:)

That is both odd and disturbing. If it is truly a minting error it could be quite valuable to the collector of the morbid...

most likely happened when the coin was struck debris build up on the coin planchette

Cosidering th whole JFK assasanation thing I think with a little creative advertising you could have a winner.

The shooter from the Grassy Knoll did it.

Believe i t was don on purpose. The dent in front of the face and 3 small marks look like plier or vice grip marks.

i thought of that to but, wouldnt the pliers be smooth?

Impossible , but it looks like bite marks, part of a molar impression up by the hairline and on the temple, near the L is the eyetooth which hangs down lower. even looks arched.

To determine whether or not this is a genuine error, you'd need to watch the McGruder film frame-by-frame for at least 40 years. Then you still wouldn't know. Was it minted on November 22? My apologies to the squeamish.

Is there any corresponding damage on the reverse?
