An error is simply a coin that has something gone wrong during the minting process. The minting process is a fairly simple manufacturing procedure with all steps well known and documented, anything going wrong during one of these steps can lead to an error coin. Once the coin leaves the dies anything that happens to it is simply damage. There are several numismatic sites that explain all the types of errors. One common misconception is that all errors are quite valuable, actually most add very little or no value to the coin.
