I think it is copper. About 3" x 2". Any estimates as to when it was made?

Just a guess: 1880 or so. Not sure it's a broach. Might be an early hair barett for holding hair in place. Looks like it's missing a metal pin of some sort. I agree it looks like copper, from the greenish verdigris.

Bramble, first of all GREAT find; don'tcha just love finding jewelry? I think it's from the Victorian era. Since it has a black stone (looks black to me from the pic), it could be a 'mourning' brooch. Brass has a very distinct odor that gets on your hand/fingers when handling it, so give it the sniff test to determine. If you handle a brass door key, you'll see (smell) what I mean. Breezie
