EPPING FOREST: Treasure found in district
By James Colasanti
TREASURE has been unearthed in the district.
A medieval silver ring, thought to be from the 13th or 14th centuries, was found in the Abridge area on February 25 last year.
It has been authenticated by the British Museum and was declared as treasure by Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murrary at an inquest at Newbridge House, Chelmsford, yesterday.
The piece, found with a metal detector by Ruth Cattermole, from London, was believed to have "properties which protect against fever", the hearing heard.
And in nearby Theydon Mount, a penannular from the late Bronze Age was found on May 11 last year.
The ring - which contains around ten per cent of precious metals - is believed to have been made between 1150 and 750 BC, the hearing heard.
"We do have a lot of buried treasure in this part of the county," said Coroner Beasley-Murray.
