Don't do this, but I had one that had about 1/8 of crust on both sides, I could not tell what it was. I went the electrolysis route. It cleaned up, lost a little metal and I could not get a date from it. Maybe you can soak it in some EVOO for a month. Or you could heat it up and drop it in some ice water.

Def, Worth a Try IMO.
 

Have you cleaned it yet? Here is one in the hole and then after a warm hydrogen peroxide bath checking it often.
