Well I have a permission from a friend to detect their yard in the historic area of my town here in Iowa. It’s a large estately brick home built in 1867. Its never been detected, at least in the last 30+ years that they’ve owned it. Needless to say I was very excited to get out yesterday and dig it for a few hours. By the time I left I was totally defeated, every good small coin/button signal revealed only these hooks. All over the entire property. Far and close to the house. Edges and interior of yard. Totally baffling. I must have dug over 30 of them before I just quit. The only old item I dug was a turn of the century rug fastener in great shape. Totally bummed. 0DFF479A-F290-4A67-894E-79E9A5626DCF.jpeg

This shows how they are used on asbestos shingles, and why they’re usually bent when we find them:

Which isn’t to say they weren’t used in other applications.

Oh well that makes sense. They must have just been throwing them from the roof during a tear off. Thanks guys for the quick id.

I've dug a few old sites like that and A2coins is right... Don't give up on that place.
Take your time and slow down. Pretty soon you will be able to tell by the sound and the coins will start popping..
Good luck

I’m using a Tesoro vaquero so I rely on the smoothness and repeatability at a low disc. Unfortunately these things sound good to the vaquero. Good advice on slowing down. I’m always rushed. I will focus on a smaller area when I go to these in town homes

Always thought those were the entire fastener they used to hold those shingles down and bent from behind. Thanks for finding that page Ben.
