Was wondering if any of my southern neighbours could maybe date this for me. Old can of Emergency Drinking Water - Property of U.S. GOV'T - contract no. N383-155s-77754 - specification no. MIL-W-15117A - International Packing Corp. Richmond, Virginia.

My family and I was living in Biloxi, Ms. went Hurricane Camille came thru in 1969 and I remember getting water in the same cans at the USO office. We was out of power & water for 2 weeks.

I still have a six pack or two from "Andrew" back in '92, of course the cans are aluminum now and they were donated from Anheuser Busch.

We use to put them in our 20-man survival kits and in our 1-man survival kits. We have since gone to flex-pak water, but they are still availble through the military supply system. To inspect them we did a "Slap Test", slap the end of the can with your hand if the water moving inside made a slap sound it passed, if it didn't the water was bad. After you opened one you had to let it breath for a little while, regardless it still tasted like can. We used them up to the late '90's.

Traded an icecold 6 pack of Campbells tomato juice for 2 cases of MRE's and 2 cases of bug dope with a Guard unit after Katrina . They wanted to throw in 3 cases of water as boot . I declined .
Those were aluminum unpainted snap top cans donated by Anhauser -Busch .

Straight sided steel can of drinking water. A lovely relic of the cold war. Back in the early 80's I had access to the state government parking garages by the state capitol building in Atlanta. The garages were posted fallout shelters and at the lowest level their were supplies in case of war or other major disaster. I can remember seeing items like what you've found. Keep it... kind of a cool conversation piece.

I used to be in management with Sears right out of college and there was an occassion that I helped close down a very old Sears store. I essentially directed a group of laborers to clean out every inch of the store including the rather cavernous basement that was being used as a warehouse for maintenance equipment, lawn mower repair, etc. We finally reached the very rear of the basement and found crate after crate labeled with "Civil Defense". It turns out that the store's basement was an official Civil Defense Fallout shelter during the 50's and 60's. Upon opening several crates there were things such as first aid kits, iodine, sulfur tablets, cans of dried beef, and case after case of canned water. It's been quite a while but I'm almost positive the cans were labeled exactly like the ones you have there. Sorry for the long story
