Elmers Glue

I have seen here at one time or another about getting crud off of coins using glue. So I am going to take it uopn my self to try this with Elmer's Washable School Glue and post the results. Right now you are going to get a before picture. I hope when I get home tomorrow that the glue is dry and I can peel it off. Then everybody will see a before and after picture.

I had posted on here previously about using Elmer's Glue, and found out some interesting facts over the past several months to share with you. It turns out that I had started with some very old white Elmer's, and it did a great job in conjunction with distilled water and olive oil soaks. Key here is that it was over 20 years old! When I bought a new bottle of Elmer's, it came off the coin very nicely, but picked up very little - pretty much a waste of time. Then tried Elmer's Wood Glue (the yellow stuff) which works much better overall. Have also tried hot glue gun, but the wood glue is the best I've found, even though it is kind of hard to pry off when dry. Sure hopes this helps all of the 'glue guys' out there!

You started-out with a coin that wasn't all that bad. You'll notice an even bigger difference if you start with a "crustier" coin. When you apply the glue, use it freely & let it "spill" over the sides of the coin, it'll make it easier to peel-off of the coin.

Once dried, you can also throw it in the freezer, as the coin & glue will contract at different rated, and supposedly help loosen any crud.

Here are the results. Even though the dime was not that cruddy, the glue did take some crud off. Pic 1 Before 2 is after 3 the drieg glue. I will have to try with a crudier coin the next time.

next time try it with a coin that doesn't have oil embedded in it, and there is a big difference between white glue and yellow glue. white glue will dissolve in water, yellow glue is a resin, which makes it harder and dries faster, even after white glue dries it is still flexible (safe for children)
