I mentioned awhile back about this article. I refound it at the link below.

I have not used this method yet but intend to with a dug Remington cap-and-ball pistol frame. --Well, maybe first with an old hatchet!
I was thinking that the medium used was lye, but I see that it is plain, old washing soda (Arm & Hammer brand).

Google results show that several other sites mention the method also, some done on a large scale, tractor wheels etc.
Good luck!

Get one of the plastic 55 gal drums. I've picked up the blue ones for $5ea. Measure & cut them in two lengthwise. They make excellent tanks for large objects. If you split them right, you'll have a bung in each half. add PVC pipe with a 90 & a PVC valve to make draining & cleaning easy. Clip several anodes around the edge with those paper clamps. Add your bath whether it be soda, citric acid or....... Also good for cleaning auto parts etc. Get a gallon of grill cleaner from Smart & Final or a restaurant supply. Works great for cleaning those nasty antique parts. The Smart & Final grill cleaner will strip paint without all the acids etc and doesn't tear up the metal like some other techniques. It's food grade.
