I am assuming the date of May 7, 1872 is the patent date. Google Patents would be a good place to start.

Welcome to TNet!

IF, and I mean IF, it is an electrical item, then it was probably patented by T. A. Edison. That was the only person who had electrical patents on that date that I could find.

Having said that, don't have a clue as to what it is. Or if it is electrical related.

If it is electrical, a switch would make sense, but so would a bus...

Never seen one like this before.

I don't see a switch because both of what I'd call the top and bottom are in contact. Switches can't do that.
Is there a separation with insulation between the two and can they come apart?

Good question. This is a MD find from about 10 years ago in Houston. I'll have to find my "Finds" box and see if it separates. In the top photo you can see what appears to be three rivets on the back side.

Breezie, thanks for the suggestion and research. I blew up those diagrams but I don't see anything like my object in the drawings.

Part of a gas burner for a stove or something that needed a gas burner?

I'm leaning that way also. ...But then I must be tired. Wasn't even seeing that it was both sides showing! :tongue3:

The Google patent search doesnt work for me anymore so I tried the USPTO database search Patent Database Search Results: isd/5/7/1872 in US Patent Collection and the results are 271 patents issued on May 7, 1872. You may have have to search each and every one.

I think its an interesting item and if it were mine I would take the time to search. This item with a clear patent date is solvable but I dont know how to refine the search and Im trying.
