Found this small copper triangular piece with a man's face. I have no idea what it is. Its about 3/4" wide and high and the back is smooth.

Reminds me of the bottom of a door handle that you push the button with your thumb

Looks more likely to have been cast as opposed to carved. :icon_scratch:
I'm thinking along the same lines as bologna, possibly furniture hardware.

Did you find it in a residential or farm setting?

Dave it was at the site of an old settlement. Not much history but it appears to have been 4 or 5 houses here. We have found a fair amount of furniture hardware.

I'm guessing part of a sword guard.

Here is an 1821 US Infantry Officer's Sword:

Not an exact match but you can see the possibility...

These types of mythical figures/faces appear a lot in the 19thc depending on the context of where it's being used, in this case likely a furniture escutcheon plate. :dontknow:

Hope you get a more definitive answer to your question,
Dave

Very interesting. I like that idea. Lost Signal found a sword guard at the same site with a Cornucopia on it, the face could be Pan, they could have possibly gone together. May never know but it is a pretty cool thought.

I’m going with sword part due to the number of different sword pieces that we have found there.

Looks 18th C to me.
My first thought was an old gun butt, but sword seems possible as well.
