Found a nice Edgefield Scraper a couple days ago. Looks like it was made and hardly used if used at all. 100_3808.jpg100_3810.jpg

Wow willjo! That's some really nice/clean flaking! Looks straight out of the package! Super awesome find.

That's a beauty bet you were happy to pull that one.

so why is it called a scraper if it looks like a knife?

I'm a newb, but I would have guessed a spear point - if both edges are sharp. Big enough.

Really like the edge work/micro-serations on that one…nice find!

It was hard to show in the photo but one side has a bevel on it, If you look up Edgefield scraper you will see they have one side beveled.

One edge sharp and one beveled. First stage edgefield.

More examples

Here is a couple examples that show the bevel better and more use.

So a "bevel" is basically a flat, user friendly edge & the things that look like spear or arrow heads to me are actually scrapers or knives. This must have a bevel then, but what would it be called? Sorry to include a pic on ur post but I want to learn!

The beveled points were before bow and arrow. There is a Bolen bevel point that is beveled on both sides and it was a knife or dart point. There is other beveled points but they are beveled on both sides unlike the edgefield scraper that is beveled on one side and usually uniface. The piece you are showing looks like a thinning flake but could be something need better photo to tell.

You know better than me seeing I don't believe I have ever found 1. Learn something new everyday if you want to.

Thinning flake?! How dare you! Just kidding. That piece was part of a "failed" post I made 6/26/15 & screwed up by posting it under fur trade. It's called "some recent finds". Check it out & I think you'll see the odds it's natural is very unlikely. Everything in the pics were from a 2x6 foot area. Taking this site slowly & thoroughly. I barely found any stone in the soil anyway. It mostly turned out to be clay pottery. If you do look at it, please DON'T reply. I'd rather it fade away. It was pretty average for that site & it was wrong forum.

I would be interested in seeing some of your finds in the forum. Post some in your own thread on the artifact forum.

OK rock I'll get around to it before too long. I've meant to in the past but always screwed it up & lost interest. Again Willjo, amazing tools - whatever they are called. HH
