i just wanted to know what people thought about buying old us silver coins on eBay. Can you find good deals and is it worth it, that is to buy old silver coins with the clad that i find from metal detecting. i was looking at a 4 coin set seated quarter barber quarter standing liberty quarter and regular silver quarter for around 10$ would this be a good price to pay? i would post this on anther section but there is almost no activity of lately, thanks for the help, bourassa.

If you're just going to use the clad that you find from MDing to buy silver, it sounds like a great idea. I'd look around at local stores before going on eBay, though. People on eBay tend to kill you with shipping charges, bu you can still find some good deals here and there.

I second the shopping local.. years ago when I went to coin shops.. i use to,,, or guess still do, collect Ancient Roman and Greek.. I always walked the tables just looking and there were dealer there who sold bags of silver at content value.. if you are going to buy it as an investment.. that woud be the way to go... if you are looking to invest.. then I'll give the same advice and old dealer gave me... always save up and buy the key and semi-keys dates... they hold their value and generally always go up.. for what's that worth..

I have bought just a hand full of coins from a dealer and got some average deals less the shipping and handling after I compared to Ebay auction stuff. It is best to know what you want to buy, research the price, know what it's worth then pursue the coin/relic as cheap as possible. Spontaneous buying will kick your butt unless you know what you are doing. HH, Mike

I know ebay & deals can be had but you better know your stuff or your be stung (plenty of fakes but I can spot them, can you?).

im not just investing in the silver i would like to buy the older stuff like, early 1900's and 1800's like the barber and seated coins. i thought that they would be cool when im older and can pass them down. thanks for the help though.

Probably not as many fakes of those coins (other than very rare dates).

would those coins be worth anything in 50 years? like seated coins? just average dates, i was just going to try buying coins online for like 5-10 dollars a coin and start a collection of the coins i get from metal detecting. it seams liek it is too darn hard finding those in the wild, although i have found a few. ??? ???

Depends on whether you doing it for fun or investment. If fun, just enjoy collecting & filling the gapped dates. Don't worry about how much they might make & sure enough they will rise in value (somewhat). If your talking about investing in coins then its a completely different ball game. You want to spend as much as you can afford on 1 very high grade coin (real of course) & thats a better way to make good money.

completly for fun and im just going to buy random coins just for the fun of it becuase i enjoy seeing all of the old coins, if you no what i mean

good, me too.

I always buy nice silver coins on ebay 4 times a year when I change in my pennies.

what kind of silver do you buy i was looking at the seated coins and wat do u look for when buying the coins, in ebay that is.

Try to find the graded coins on Ebay. I have bought and sold many on ebay, never have I encountered a problem. I only buy from those with 100% Positive feedback WITH lots of transactions. You would do best by finding someone here on the site. These are some ligit folks and I have gotten good deals on coins from them. Cheers, Shane

If you know the trick in how to win at ebay then you can get some good deals.

Here's a few tricks I do.

1. Keep a track on the items you are interested in and wait until the final hours but don't bid yet. Click on watch items then when it gets down to the final minutes go back to the item and see where the bids are if its in a good range and only a few minutes to go wait until 15 seconds are left and put up a bid 2 to 3 dollars higher than the current bid. This will top off others how are doing the same thing. If the current bid is 15.00 bid 17 or 18 with 15 seconds left this will put you in at an advantage of not letting others getting a rebid in due to time is over. And for instance someone does bid 15.50 in the final few seconds and you bid 18 and you win you will win with a 16.00 bid not 18.

2. Unbidded items with less than 2 hours with low reserve, say you find a cool deal on a half dollar or what ever and it's .99 with no bids don't start off with just bidding at the start. Check out book value and put up a maximum bid. For instance let's say a morgan dollar with no bids yet .99 reserve 2 hours left. put up a maximum bid of 15.00 on it and if you do the current bid remains at .99 cents until others start to bid. Once others get into the action alot of them get fustrated of rebidding due to "you was oubidded by another bidder" this will show until your max bid is top by another. Alot will just give up bidding over and over. Sometimes it works out good sometimes it doesn't just don't put up a max bid more than what you think it's worth. A morgan dollar or walker half will almost gets bids like crazy no matter what with 1 or 2 hours left.

3. Guarentee win: Bid 10.00 higher than current bid with few seconds remaining.

4. Don't make quick bids keep a watch on items until the final hour. Biddin early causes challanges from other bidders often and before you know it you wasted too much time on an item and now it has a current bid more than you are willing to pay for it.

Doesn't your #2 suggest doing what #1 says not too? :D

The secret to bidding is simple, never bid until the auction is down to 5-6 seconds, and bid the most you're willing to pay. The ONLY reason to ever to bid early is to kill a "Buy it Now" to have a chance at getting it for the lower starting price.
