Yeah oh well at least I'm only doing 1 box right now. Anything 83 and earlier I'm pulling. Gonna start collecting all the coppers I guess. Not sure why, maybe it will be worth it eventually.

I hope so, because I have about 800 lbs so far. Don't forget to separate the wheats. Good luck.

No wheats yet so far thru 5 rolls. 45 to go so hopefully something good. Is there a real need to separate the wheats from the other coppers?

No need to pull the 83's. They aren't good for anything. Most of the 82's are but you will need a scale to tell which ones are keepers. If the penny has a shield on the reverse it's not a keeper either. Unless it has a wreath around it and an Indian Head on the obverse. I keep the wheaties seperate fom common copper coins. Get a magnifying glass and latex gloves. I will go through about four boxes this weekend. Filling a penny book makes the hunt more fun. Good Luck.

Ah that means I can put some stuff back. I knew it was either the 82 or 83 which some were copper some weren't. Oh well. I'll just keep the 82s and if I get a scale later I'll mess around with that.

After a time, you will be able to look at a handful of pennies and pick out the copper ones from the zinc. It just takes practice.

I went out and bought a cheap diy sorter. i actually bought one for $46 + $5 shipping but it came with a half dollar roll ($10 rebate!) so for $40 you can get one. i built a little cardboard box around it and it works awesome, even made a hopper out of cardboard for it. if you are creative enough i would DEFINATELY reccomend it. it seems to have a 1% fail rate to me...

I found some I can tell by eye without turning it over to see the date. But then there are others which are still shiny a bit, those I have to look at. And then there are some that have the green that copper gets on it over time.

Since you already separated the 83's, you might as well check for the doubled die reverse. There are doubled die obverses, but the preferred by collectors is the DDR.
