Easy way to clean silver****

In a plastic or glass container, place a piece of aluminum foil.
Place the object on the foil.
Cover with 2 tablespoons of baking soda.
Add two quarts of boiling water.
Soak until bubbles stop.
Rinse with clean water.
This process chemically transfers the tarnish to the foil.

Works for me 95% of the time even on the most tarnished coins and rings.

You worded your first post ...remove the tarnish, which is the patina, now if you had said to remove the crud..that would be different.

Good point, but some would consider an extremely heavy patina crud. I think most wash the "dirt crud" off first. Frank...

This is a great tip and one I used just a few weeks ago on an old silver service set I have.
