Easter Day BUTTON DISCOVERY .....and its a NEW REGIMENT I havn't found before!!!
Didn't have much free time yesterday but the time I did I put to good use. I finished digging out the second pit I have discovered at my site. The signals were few and far between but just as I thought the pit was played out 2 more regimental buttons saw the light of day for the first time in over 230 years! The first button was another 41 but the last button to be dug was a super rare 95! Both are small buttons and are in super shape. Its amazing seeing the different patinas these buttons exhibit but I guess they differ so much according to their composition and the soil conditions immediately surrounding them. The 95 was in an iron infested area of the pit while the 41 was not. From what I've read the 95th was called the Walsh Regiment and they were made up of Irishmen. Troini's book strates 140 men served on board the Bonhomme Richard as marines in September of 1779. Thsi makes the 15th different regiment discovered on this small site..... JUST AMAZING!!! Unfortunately as I said the pit is finished and filled in so this may be the last discovery at this historic site. Its been one heck of a ride!!! Other than the buttons some musketballs were found, a silver plated flat button, as well as a huge brass finial to something but unfortunately no more coins. Hope everyone had a great Easter!
