I got out with my friend, TNMountains today for a hunt. He was gracious to show me what hunting at a rock shelter was like. After lots of sweat and ticks we both were able to find something…an added bonus to the great conversation, the incredible views and peaceful surroundings in the land that time forgot.

Awesome... I really like that pentagonal/jacks reef style point!! Killer

Joe I had a blast!
We went as far as we could by truck. Then unloaded a 4 wheeler and when it would not go any further we hiked it.That hunting is not for the faint of heart is it?
The day was worth it when you dug up that Jacks Reef. Glad you got a nice mortar for your collection too!
Look forward to a leisurely creek hunt!

Amen to that! I'm gonna sleep well tonight and be sore in the morning!

Looks like you two had a great day with rewards of an adventure. :icon_thumright:

Sounds tough not sure if I would go through that much trouble for 1 point. Now the Metate is another story that's really nice. Bet yall had fun.

Rock you never know unless you try. There could have been a 100 or more there and probably still is.Somebudy beat us to it 20 years ago. It's no trouble... and it is fun to me.

nice looking place to hunt, looks like some good stuff up in there.

The fun was the journey and the hunt…I didn't think we would find anything…and like TNMountains said…you never know...

One of the coolest looking places to hunt. 20 or so years ago there was a small motel near the Fontana Dam and the guy that owned it had a heck of a collection from some of the caves/shelters and the area on display at the motel. He offered to take me cave/shelter hunting sometime but I near made it back. Man I wish I would have taken him up on it.

The most surprising thing was when scouting it I found the base off a Dalton. I never expected to see East Tn Joe pull out that Hex point. That means they actually had bows and were hunting game and not just gathering nuts. Multi component site. We did have wild turkeys flying everywhere.

And TNMountains didn't wait too long to find one of his own!…what did you settle on TNM? Fox Valley was your initial thought...

I can't figure it out. Its a side notch with a bifurcated base and a heavy medium ridge. Not sure they use the term fox valley any more after looking it up.
I want to age it around your time frame but it may be early archaic. It is not a pretty point, lol. You did good on humping that Morter out. I bet there are a lot more mortars over the creek. I may hunt Chickamauga this weekend.. Kayak.

Mine isn't a perfect pentagonal either…who knows?…pretty sure the makers didn't care too much about what future peoples thought their point types would be categorized as!…as usual with most of our local points…it is similar but not one to be published as a perfect example…I agree with you that there are probably lots more nutstones laying up there, as well as other artifacts…good luck on the creek…looks to be hot so take an occasional dip to cool off!

I must say, what a great day out hunting, with all the beautiful scenery, plus you found artifacts, but had you not, there's something about an arduous outing that makes it more memorable, HH!
