Hello all i found some gold sapphire/diamond earrings and necklace at a thrift shop today, paid 2 dollars for them all (half priced hehe). They looked nice for what i assume is costume jewelry, even took them to a jewelry store in the area and he said they are really nice looking for costume jewelry. He even pulled out some real sapphires to show me how close my fake glass sapphire was to his real ones. The chain on the necklace doesn't seem to fit with the same color of gold look as the pendant and earrings, no markings on the pendant, but on the earrings they have markings on the back. The jeweler kept eying this costume jewelry with his loop a lot and said it was a very well made piece of costume and if he sold stuff like that at an estate sale he would sell them for 30 dollars /shrug. Will prob just give to my grandmother to play with and am sure it would make her happy :headbang:

So the question is, what are the markings on the back of these costume sapphire/diamond earrings, it reads "HGECFJ".

Other finds of the day were a 925 silver cross on a silver beaded chain (3 dollars), marked clasp claw, both sides of clasp (925 Italy) joining the chain and back of cross, also on back of cross is a picture of a 3 pronged candlestick with the initials J A, on letter on each side. But i think the icing on the cake was the change i got back for the necklace, 14 cents, and the dime was a 1964D lol.

Sounds like a James Avery here. Wifey loves that maker and has a nice collection also, thanks to dadyo's keen eye. My wedding band she got me to update the old original is James Avery. Keep looking for those. The brand has many fans and sells well every time if you chose to do that with yours.

Hi, I believe the first 3 letters of "HGECFJ" mean Heavy Gold Electroplate. The last 3 letters are probably the makers initials. Also, James Avery stuff sells very good on ebay. I sold a pair of sterling earrings by him for $126. I bought for .50 at a sale. The sterling was only worth a few dollars. Good luck!

Sorry i didn't upload the pictures when i posted, it was dark and prefer taking pics in natural light. Here they are though now.

The Necklace with Charm

The fake sapphire/diamond necklace charm and earrings. On 2nd look maybe its "HBEGFJ" lol i don't know.

And the bonus dime =)

Too bad i have never done ebay or really know how, heard its a huge hassle. I would be willing to learn and make some extra profits on stuff if anybody has the time to teach me the ways of ebay.

You just need a little time to set things up. You will most likely need a PayPal account. As far as eBay, once you set up your acct (follow the directions as you go) its just a matter of uploading pictures and typing out an honest explanation of item. Your pictures are great on this thread so that's half the battle. If people have fuzzy pics in a listing I'm looking at, I usually will not even consider buying it--frustrating. Allow for eBay to take 10% if your sales--including shipping you charge. They do allow you to list 50 free listing each month, but when item sells eBay takes 10%. Just remember that and include it in your asking price.

Research your items before listing them by searching eBay and eBay completed listings. You can do it!! Good luck!

You will make more on retired James Avery pieces (I don't know if yours is retired)

Your cross is the Beveled Clechee Cross, cat. number C-567. Retails for $57. However, I am concerned about the mark. The candleabra is correct, but I've always seen Averys' mark as containing the word "ster" instead of 925. Probably not a major issue as I've can't say I've ever run into replica James Avery and he is going to more modern methods of marking items recently. You can call their shop at: 1-800-283-1770 and they are very helpful (I've talked to them before and they have one of the friendliest and most helpful customer service departments I've ever come across) and will answer any questions you ask.

I do believe the .925 is a good mark and will give a hint to when the cross was made. I had a larger cross with a fish on it with a large James Avery candelabra mark I found in a trift store, my wife said I could sell that one, as it didn't appel to her as much as the other designs I've found. I called the JA customer service to see if they could date the piece. They said to email a picture and it will be a charge of $12.00. Not bad, but I opted not to do that and just put it up for auction and hope someone would just let me know a little more on it as the auction ran. No one did, and I believe it sold at a $109. I was hoping it was a very early piece and would go high. If I'm not sure of things I sell on ebay, I say that and do the start bidding at .99 cents. Most buyers of signed pieces know what their looking at and all about it, plus you can return to me if not pleased up to 14 days and even at that I'll still consider a return at more time. No one yet has ever requested a return to me. One thing on this C-567 cross I would do is just sell the cross on its own w/o chain. Even if you say its not a JA chain they'll ask 5 to 6 times "is the chain a James Avery?, plus I think some bidders are even a bit offended by the fact it has a replacment chain and are less attracted to the piece. I save the .925 chains, just to add to maybe another pendant I find w/o a chain.

Thanks for all the replies and information. If i list just the charm do i take the little silver ring off the top of it also that connects it to the chain? Also should i take better pictures of it next to a ruler or something to show the actual size or just take pictures and state the size in a description?

My choice would be, keep the little ring with the cross. the new owner will need it.

Sapphire and Diamond earrings and necklaces are perfect to improve your fashion style and you're so lucky that you bought those jewelry in cheap prices especially the cross necklace which still looks good.

Having seen lots of JA items over the years IMO the chain goes with the cross.
Your profile says that you are in OKC. There is a James Avery store there. Oklahoma City, OK - Store Locations in Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama & Tennessee - James Avery Jewelry

The stores here in Texas will clean items for free. Maybe in person they would id it for you too.

Also FYI from the JA FAQ: I lost one of my James Avery earrings! Can I get just one replaced?
Yes, at James Avery we know that one earring alone isn’t much good and that accidents do happen. If one of the earrings you buy from us is lost or destroyed, and it is in our current line, you can purchase another pair from us for one-half the price of the new pair plus exchanging your remaining earring. (The remaining item must be received for a credit to be issued).
(Note: Diamond earrings are not covered under this policy.)

Friend saw the necklace and wanted it. He asked what i was going to ebay it for, told him hoping to get 100 dollars but who knows, maybe more ,maybe less. He offered me 100 dollars for the necklace on the spot, i took 50 for it and i am happy and he is happy now.
