Hey Guys, been racking my brain and Haven't been able to I.D. this one that I dug yet....its looks pretty early and has the Jerusalem Cross with 4 smaller crosses surrounding it with the letters "E C E D" and what looks like a "2" and then three X's "XXX" other side is more worn with what looks like a palm or maybe feathers on a wing and two symmetrical "S" shapes back to back.

My hunch is Portuguese 30 Reis, early to mid 1700s. Can't find an exact match anywhere though... :icon_scratch:

You mean E C _ E D, right?

So...what is it, IP?

I can't tell you exacty, but can make it easier to figure out with a little looking.

I knew it was early 18th century, and the XXX probably stood for 30 deniers. (French) I knew because the cross was different then the typical French 30 Deniers so it was probably from a certain French state, and Lorraine came to mind. So I went with that, and found a silver coin with a silver cross so figured I was on the right track. But soon after I hit the pic I posted, and being familiar with the coin from a few years back I knew it was the one. I'll post the link I got it and appears they're trying to figure it out too, but it's in French. They are calling it 30 Deniers which I expected, and the date they say is 1728. That's as far as I looked but should easily be enough to find the rest.

Here's the connection. These Kings/coins can get very frustrating trying to sort out who minted what and where.

History: Léopold I (1679-1729) is the son of Charles V (1642-1690) and d' Éléonore d' Austria (1653-1697). Leopold I (1679-1729) was its off Charles V (1642-1690) and Eleanor off Austria (1653-1697). It recovers the duchy of Lorraine after the congress of Ryswick on October 30, 1697 and wife Charlotte d' Orleans (1676-1744), the girl of Philippe, the brother of Louis XIV, in 1698. It retrieves the duchy off Lorraine after the Congress off Ryswick October 30,1697 and married Charlotte d' Orleans (1676-1744), daughter off Philip, the brother off Louis XIV in 1698. François Ier (1708-1765) succeeds his father in 1729, but abdicates in 1737 the duchy of Lorraine, marries Marie-Therese and will become emperor of the Holy roman Empire as from 1745. Francis I (1708-1765) succeeded his father in 1729, goal abdicated in 1737 the duchy off Lorraine, wife Marie-Therese and become Emperor off the Holy Roman Worsens from 1745.

The eagle design on the coin is more typical for Austria than France.

I did ID that for you a long time ago... you must have been drunk. :laughing7: As for the sites with pics I just found those tonight. Didn't you tell me fairly recently you couldn't find that coin?

PS... I thought that was the same coin as yours but was 100% sure. If you read the history there is an Austrian connection, and it looks like one too. So now you know it makes sense where you found it.
