Cool! Never seen anything like that! It looks like lead.

Possibly made by a soldier in the field? :dontknow:

Maybe cuff link or a collar button?

I thought lead at first but it has a spot that flaked off and it appears to be pewter.

I can't see it in your pic, but 'R' would be for Rifleman. I believe they used that designation until the early Civil War. I = Infantry. C = Cavalry. D = Dragoon. R = Rifleman... I don't know the distinction between Rifleman and Infantry...

It looks to me like a waynes legion or Gw inaugural button but it is high convex. Everything i see of them types are flat buttons? Im stumped. And the attachment is different than any ive seen. Possibly for an ammo pouch?

Agree. Never seen anything like it.

I doubt it is for a cartridge box as it would be cumbersome. I'm a CW reenactor and cartridge box fasteners are made for quick opening and closing. Could be for a haversack. Possibly a knapsack. But I don't think pewter or lead would be strong enough for a knapsack fastener.

Still can't see much detail. Does it look like these?

I can almost see a rim around yours. Like another button was used to make the mold for it...

Still, I've never seen a fastener even remotely close to that. I'm guessing it was a field-made replacement for something but it didn't work well and was either lost or discarded.

Sorry man, that's all I've got. Good luck.
