Early Navy button?

Hey y'all. Hoping someone can help me ID this button. Found it this morning at a union and confederate coastal site in SC. Not seeing any matches in Albert's book. Is it more modern than Civil War? Thanks!

Think you have a union naval button- while modern naval buttons are modeled after your's, the crudeness of the anchor is leads me to believe it is much earlier. Here is a similar button for comparison

I'm pretty sure your button is a modern fashion button. The loop at the end of the anchor doesn't extend far enough to the side. And I would bet your back is steel.

Think I may have jumped the gun, other than 1 online reference to it as a union, I can't find another example.

Please post a photo of the back. It can be extremely difficult to ID a button without seeing the back.

Its definitely a civilian fashion button in a Navy motiff. The back is probably steel. You can find these fashion buttons today on eBay the value is minimal. I found one in my backyard under the old clothesline. They have been around 100 years but are definitely civilian blazer type.

Similar to this one made by Waterbury Button Co been making buttons since 1812. Eagle/Anchor - Waterbury Button Its listed as fashion,

Agreed blazer button "in the style of" a pre WW2 Navy button. Here is the back of your button, no? on the right?

Its just a Navy motiff. This style anchor and eagle have never been used by the US Navy or any Navy. Compare with the US Navy buttons posted by Duggap.


Yes we may be able to date it by the back. Steel back self shanks are 20th century. It may be a cool old button but its a civilian blazer type fashion design, no matter what the back looks like,

This is the back. It was found at a site which was used by both the union as well as confederate sides in the CW. It measures approx 28-29mm.

It doesnt matter where it was found its a civilian fashion button without any doubt. The rusted steel back usually means 20th century
