Early flip tab?

Found this and was wondering if anyone knew what it was.
Looks like the straight part might be pounded into a piece of wood and then
the flip tab part was where someone might tie a cord to a tent or something like that. Anyway, that my theory. What's yours?

perhaps a pull pin

Pull pins are like cotter pins, but they are easier/faster to pull - small ones like this are used on things like fire extinguishers and hand grenades and you'll see larger ones on beach umbrellas, weight lifting equipment and umpteen other things

A grenade pin is a cotter pin attached to a metal key chain loop.
They have been making them that way since at least WWII.
