Re: Early English Token? & 18th Century Dutch? Copper

The one with a Lion in the center may be a 1600's Spanish Lion & Castle MARAVEDIS COB

I've had several of them in the past, and that's what it looks like to me.

Can you show a pic of the other side of the 2nd piece?

It may help me to find out what it is,

Cool finds

Re: Early English Token? & 18th Century Dutch? Copper

Hi Lonewolfe, thanks for looking and replying. Here is a picture of the other side of the copper. As you can see its pretty worn. The last four letters of the first line appear to read: ONTE and the second line's last five letters appear to be COIRE. Also when I first dug the coin up, I thought the first letter of the second line was an R. So the word may be something like this: R---COIRE. Thanks again for the info on that Spanish Cob. By the way, the reason I think it's Dutch, if you follow this link

http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/Base Coins.htm?

it will take you to the COLCHESTER TREASURE HUNTING HOLIDAYS IN ENGLAND web page. Scroll all the way down to you get to an 1843 Kingdom of the Netherlands 1/2 cent copper. That coin has the exact same crown, but with a W instead of an X.

Re: Early English Token? & 18th Century Dutch? Copper

I think what you may have is a Dutch "Hard times token" of sorts from the 1700's,

I'm not positive yet as I will need to do some research in detail to be sure, but I've seen several in the past with similar markings, etc.

They were used during times when money was hard to come by, and traded for food, etc.

I'll check a little more into it, and post back here tomorrow night with any/all findings,

HH
