Went back to the spot I found the 1746 George II and other items and came up with a bit more. Found a couple of artillery buttons. One from the war of 1812 and one from the 1814-1821 period. Also came up with a fish hook shaped square nail and a whatsit. Any ideas on the whatsit or what purpose the square nail?

The square nail looks like it was just clinched after driving in whatever it was holding. common practice, I still do it today. Usually the nail is longer than the piece I am driving it in, I bend the point around like that and use a weight, iron or some steel item on the head and hit the bent part to drive it into the back of the wood. At least that is why it could be shaped like that.

And the whatsit sure looks like part of a horse bit to me.

I went back today and found another 1812 Artillery Button. Now I'm working on permission to hunt two homes, one dated 1759 and another dated 1760 a few miles away.

Wow....... now those my friend are nothing short of awesome.:icon_thumleft:

Don your obviously in a killer spot. The war of 1812 buttons are some of my favorites. Just love some of the designs. Congrats on some really nice recoveries bud

The nail, I believe is a Door Nail.
Used on a hinge and bent to prevent the nail from being worked lose.
The phrase "dead as a door nail" refers to the fact that the nail is no longer usable.

Thanks for the nice comments and thanks Mike for the dead as a door nail tip. Here's the button I found today. Not quite as nice as the last, but still has the shank in the back.

Cool finds, hope to see more!

I hope to see more too, but unless they cut the field of about 3 acres I don't think I will. I really worked this yard and worked it slow. There is a field of 2-3' tall grass that I would hunt if they would ever cut it.
