Early 1800's US militia??

I recently got these 2 cartridge boxes from a friend of mine. He wasn't exactly sure what they were but told the larger one was an early militia artillery box. The other was most likely an 1840's cartridge box and is painted black with a floral design. They are both curved in shape to form to the hip so they could be worn on a belt. Has anyone seen anything like these before? I've done some research and haven't been able to find anything similar. Help???

What size are these boxes?

I do Civil War reenacting and know several guys who also do reenacting for earlier wars. I've never seen or heard of tin cartridge boxes like these. They don't seem very practical for use in battle. All I've ever seen are leather - some with smaller tin boxes inside.

That said, I did find something on the internet called an "Artillery Tube Box" which looks similar to the first box. It was used to hold friction primers but seems to be much smaller than your box.
