early 1600's whatz it

found this at an early 1600's home site. ( in USA) not sure what it could be The writing around the rim goes as follows --VENETIA * TRIAC ? ? F A LIDRA
I beleive the "animal" in the middle is a griffin. or a winged lion. It is almost the exact size of a U.S. quarter.

Maybe you English geezers may have a clue. I think that is where it was made. late 1500's early 1600's.
thanks for any help, Dan

Re: early 1600's whatz it

this is starting to add up. I beleive that a medical doctor built a homestead on top of where the 1600's home-site was. This is good stuff, thanks

Nice Id :icon_thumleft: Here's a translation of a Wikipedia article on Triaca-

http://translate.google.com/transla...v=/search?q=triaca&hl=en&site=webhp&prmd=ivns

The antidote or teriaca (from Arabic tiryāq of Latin Theriaca and Greek θηριον) was prepared multidrug composed of several different ingredients (sometimes over 70) of vegetable, mineral or animal, including opium and sometimes meat snake . Was used from the third century C. , originally as an antidote against poisons , including those derived from animal bites, and then also used as medicine against many diseases, being considered a universal panacea . It was popularized in the Middle Ages, and for many centuries was used with variations in its formulation, registering in the main pharmacopoeias of the time until he lost height in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Theriac subsequently became an important article of commerce in Western Europe, the Venetian treacle was especially valued.

TRIACIA may translate in Spanish to antidote but Im thinking its a lid to some kind of balm from Italy, possibly an ointment tin to rub on sore muscles... or it may have something to do with turpentine.

The balm itself, however, is called triaca [in Old Provencal], theriac.

The special industries of Venice were the manufacture of chemicals -- cream of tartar, cinnabar (vermilion), shellac, white lead, and triaca (the

Bigcypresshunter-
this was found in Ma, here in the states. the site dates back to the early 1600's
If youy rotate the pic it is clearly a four legged animal. I think it is a lion with wings. you can see the legs and a tail and a somewhat cartoon-ish face. I think what you thought is a palm tree is a mane.

that small buckle was found near it. It is pewter and I believe 1600's period The center pin is hand wrought iron

Re: early 1600's whatz it

thanks to everyone who helped, the info was great. I am going to mark this one as solved. I guess I am going to call it an early medicine bottle top. An anti venom perhaps. this may have come over on the Mayflower.

I think its very interesting. Im sure someone here can ID the buckle. Does anyone have that good buckle link? SS is good with buckles or Crusader.

Google "venetian treacle", or "theriaca ex Galena" to read about the medicine and search for a match.. Maybe the UK Finds database has something.
