War of 1812 US Diplomat Button?

Just dug this evening and I have not been able to get an ID on it. Does anyone know what this button is? I can't find it in my button books. I was thinking maybe an early diplomat button? It says "United States of America" and "e pluribus unum" around an eagle. Thanks!

Killer button and an interesting one... it looks similar to OD09. The eagle has the same dropped wings, but "e pluribus unum" band on yours doesn't goes down the side a little bit farther. Yet, yours says "United States Of America" like OD01. :icon_scratch:

Hopefully someone can give it a proper ID, but if it happens to be one of those odd ball ones, here is what I think about those...

I have a variation of OD07 that doesn't fit the exact description in the Alberts book. I'd guess that there are many variations that are not in the book... perhaps having to do with button making contracts in the infancy of the US, not requiring each maker to be exactly the same. In the intro to the Diplomatic Service section, Albert mentions that there is an absence of complete records of the period. There also appears to be a little uncertainty of the use for the wide variety of diplomatic service buttons, and even in the mid 1970's when the book was published, Albert mentions that many are excavated at battle and camp sites, stating they possibly had a dual use and were used for military service. It seems to me, and this is just my personal observation, that the Diplomatic Service section is a "catch all" for any odd variety of early US button that doesn't match the General Issue buttons of the period. The reason I think that, is there appears to be more variety of Diplomatic Service buttons, than there are regular issue military buttons of the period. So why would be be necessary to have so many Diplomatic Officials with such a wide variety of buttons?!? I think a lot of these were military buttons, made by mom-and-pop shop contracted button makers and as Albert stated the records of them are sparse. That's all my observation\opinion\conclusion based on me trying to find out why my OD07 didn't match the book! ha
