Hmm...Where abouts did you find it? More to the Northern half, or towards the border? The particular design of the eagle makes me think more of the middle american representations than the north american.

1. Anything on back like a clip or way of fastening it to clothes?

2. What kind of metal?

3. Do you know anything about the history of the area where you found it?

4. Are there claws visible that are grasping something?

The back is smooth. It was found at the house site of John H. Reagan. I'm not sure of what kind of metal. I don't see any claws visible.

Well I'm not sure who Mr. Reagan is but if he was a prominent local figure maybe there's some information on him at your local historical society.

Good luck with it, will be a fun mystery to solve.

Without more info...perhaps a decorative folk art piece of something?

I don't look at Wikipedia links. They are often incorrect depending on who submitted the material and how mature they are.

Is there another link to information on this person?

I can't seem to find anything matching it. Do you have a local historical society or something? If so, I'd drop them a visit, they could probably give you an idea on what it is at least.

(Or maybe Mr. Reagan just had some doohicky laying around ;)

Try typing John H. Reagan in google. I'm sorry the link I provided you was not good enough for your taste. ::)
Since we are talking about a historical and obsolete figure, its pretty safe to assume the information provided via wiki is correct.

Gosh I'm sorry. I was just looking for a simple link. Didn't mean to offend anyone. Just don't like wikipedia.

So... back to the whatsit...

This piece will be difficult to ID without some exact knowledge of it's use. The American Eagle with outspread wings was used all over the place even before it's adoption as a national symbol. Often shown with shield and olive branches on business signs, instuments, paintings, statues, military, gadets, etc...

I think Trica got the closest with the "Folk Art" theme... I'd guess anytime 1800 - 1900. :P

PS: I use wikipedia, but always back it up - have found too much misrepresented historical data there.
