A friend found this at an old home site. The site has a history of CW troop movements very nearby and the home was there at that time.

It is about 1 1/4-1/2" tip of wing to tip of wing. Made of brass. A screwed stud out the back side with that square nut on it. Trapped under the nut is something made of iron, the rusty area you can clearly see in the photos. Could be an iron grommet or it could have been attached to some object made of iron that has rusted away.

On the chest of the eagle is a projection with a hole in it. Obviously something attached there.

Can anyone give us a clue what this is and what it was used on or with?

Re: Eagle thing?

Super find, and I'm jumping in to hear what the CW folks have to say. Congrats, Breezie

Re: Eagle thing?

Can anyone send me to a photo of a drum with something like this on it?

I have a problem with it being used on a drum. All the drums I see have the rope lacing going from the hoop on one end to the hoop on the other end. If items like this were bolted on the hoop the threaded stud sticking out the back side would have to stick through the skin of the head. If you had a dozen of these around the hoop you would have a dozen holes that would quite quickly tear the head apart as tension was applied.

If by chance it was a drum with only one head on it and these things were not on the hoop but around the center of the drum, the drum body would have to be made from metal. The nut is tight on some kind of iron that is rusty. Wood drum bodies are something like 3/8" thick and the stud would have to be longer and the nut wouldn't be 1/8" from the eagle it's self.

Any other ideas?

Re: Eagle thing?

I'm interested to learn what it is :icon_thumleft:

Is it meant to have the curve to its profile? :icon_scratch:

IronSpike, Good find. That's it. But apparently my hunting partner found the 1870's version.

It's a really cool find :icon_sunny: There are some good threads on those eagles here in What Is It? Don't have time to search right now, but you may want to search a bit :coffee2:
