Eagle or serpent eating a star rosette???

Not really sure at all what this is. A friend of mine found it. Seems to be lead. Found at a civil war camp in North Alabama. Only know of one other, found in South Alabama.

I'd guess it has something to do with livery. That may be a griffin (gryphon)

Weird to have only seen two. Thanks for the help. If anyone else has anything to add I'll keep a watch.
