Got my first CW button, an Eagle I, with shank intact. I brought it inside and put it in some warm soapy water, then gently brushed it with a soft toothbrush. Still managed to dislodge the crest containing the "I". Does anyone know how to reattach the crest? Any other cleaning or preservation tips would be appreciated. (I put this post in "cleaning and preservation" yesterday and haven't had any response.) The button is pretty beat up but I'm still glad to have gotten it.

Nice button John. I have used a little bit of super glue in the past and then put on a coat of furniture paste wax. Good luck...and congrats...Lance

Never found a letter eagle, but I had one with the shield that feel out. I just used a little white glue to put it back in place. Figured I could always get the glue off with a little warm water if I had too. Funny how that piece falls out like a puzzle.

I have found bunches of them and it STILL the most exiting find for me!

Congratulations!!!

I've never had the shield come off... but I sure understand why it could... I agree that a good clear glue would be best to keep the button together. Nice find!

Is there a back mark on it that you can read?

No, I don't find any information on the back of the button.
Thank you to all who replied or as Montana Jim says, thanks for all the "free bad advice". HH to all.

Hey bud, congratulations on your first Eagle. I remember how ecstatic I was when I found mine and the little "happy" dance that I did. Dont worry about the shield, that is very common with those types of buttons. Eagles and New York buttons that have the shield, often loose their shields. You can use super glue or display it next to the button if you do not want to risk getting the super glue on the button. Either way! Great find!! ;) ;) ;)
