My son and I found this what appears to be a bird head made of what appears to be stone or other hard substance near the Scioto River in Central Ohio and we are curious if anybody has seen anything like it before? The hole where the eye is located is angled towards the beak and there are small holes on the bottom of the beak that sort of lead us to think that it may have been a pipe possibly… Not sure by any means and would welcome any feedback anybody may have, thank you.

What a super cool find.... :occasion14:

I agree with Antmike, as it appears to be natural, which in my mind makes it
even more of a rarity.

I agree it is a rock. The fields along the Scioto River are excellent places to find artifacts. I have dozens found along it from when I was young. My brother found many as well. We were living just south of Columbus & the Scioto was our stomping grounds. Keep looking.

As others have said it is natural, made by mother nature...

I know everyone on here is saying its natural, but I tend to disagree because I found something similar years back (a stone effigy it was called) and I researched it out, mine got some natural guesses as well. I sent some photos of my artifact to different archeologist and some though it was a genuine artifact, but some thought it was natural. Some archologists call my artifact a "primitive Indian fishing weight" that they attached to nets for catching fish which I found fascinating. My effigy artifact measures about the same as yours and has the shape right angle in the stone like yours and mine also has a hole through it which is bigger on one end (its bigger on one end because the way they drill it probably with a stick of some kind) just like your, all these features seem to indicate its man-made. My artifact looks like a spirit's face and yours looks like some kind of bird's head. I wish I could upload a picture of my artifact but it's buried in my collection under a lot of junk so I can't at this point, but I will sometime. I would suggest you keep it and don't modify it in any way. Keep researching it. If nothing else keep it as a conversation piece and enjoy the perplexed look on people faces as they try to guess if its natural or man-made.

There are over 3000 years of indian artifact experience here, I have 43 yrs myself. It is natural.

If you look at it there are no signs what so ever of being worked at all.

Got a Pic?

I think we can mark this one "SOVLED" :laughing7:... Although I couldn't find your exact artifact MoSeriouS (probably because yours is one of a kind) I found some similar and as suspected it's a "primitive stone Indian fishing net weight". Below are a couple links indicating that. Open links and scroll through the pics... Your artifact might be a net weight that was in the process of being created and that's why the hole isn't clean through, never the else definitely an artifact.

When a human alters a stone for the purposes of making it into a tool, or effigy of something, there are "artifacts" left behind. Tool marks, evidence of scraping, gouging or chipping, etc. These marks will endure over millennia.

Lacking that evidence, a stone that appears to look like an effigy, etc. is considered as natural in origin. It is produced by the forces of nature..heat, water, wind and cold.

Some consider that as a lesser find, but I disagree, as such naturally occurring stones that bear such a close resemblance to a bird or other animal are even more rare, IMO.

Just my two cents worth...

Yeah, someone's going to grind and polish a stone, by hand mind you, then chunk it into the water for a weight? Also again, the PO's find is just a natural rock, wishful thinking doesn't change it.
