R is for rifleman quite a few posts on cleaning them but be careful

As the others say, be careful cleaning any button. I have had pretty good success using diet coke. I use a Q-tip soaked in it and carefully clean. Clean, dry, examine. Repeat as needed. Since the shank is missing, be careful and don't get liquid inside the button.

R buttons are always a cool find. It looks like it has that thick brown crud from the woods. If you let it dry you can flick that stuff off with your thumbnail and not use any kind of liquids at all.
