Looks like a mid to late 1800's U.S. Army general staff button, but I've never seen one with only 10 stars.
Is there a backmark? Can't see one in the photo.

Correct me if I am wrong, but with the mold seam and that type of shank, wouldn't you say closer to 1900?
 

Perhaps you're right. At any rate, if Albert's information is correct, it can't be later than 1902.

As for how closely it may verge on that cutoff date, I'll gladly defer to your expertise. :coffee2:
