Hello PCHammer. I said it is POST CW era. Of the 2 links you posted, I believe the 1st is CW era the second is post-CW. Do you see the difference?

I see the difference but the first pic,the button that was not dug looks more accurate :dontknow:

If you look at the eagles right wing at the botton slope matches better :icon_scratch: i think..

The entire back is missing.

There has been a lot of debate here on whether iron backed US Navy buttons exist. A pic of the back will be needed to determine this.

There are many difference in manufacturing but the determining factor on CW era buttons is the tip of the anchor. The anchor flute is hidden behind the wing on 1850/CW era Navy buttons. The tip of your anchor flute is clearly in front of the wing making it post CW. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,333953.0.html

These are some of my CW era Navy buttons I found. Notice the anchor flute tip hidden behing wing.

Is your button iron backed? Was it rusted off?

If your button is iron backed, it may be the same as the buttons on this uniform, that still remains a mystery. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,209855.0.html

Yes i believe it was iron

Yes it looks like an ironed backed Navy button. Sounds like an oxymoron. :D Common sense would dictate US Navy would not use an ironback button that would fall off in a saltwater environment.

Vayank says that there was a US Navy CW hat button with an iron back. But your anchor is front of wing- post CW. It appears you have the same button as the mystery uniform. 1870-1941

Does anyone know for sure if the US Navy manufactured a cheap iron-backed button that could corrode and fall off?

I know for a fact, the Handy Button Machine Co. out of NY and Chicago manufactured cheaper tin or zinc plated iron or steel backed buttons for the US Army during WWII...http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,212590.msg2550839.html#msg2550839 ...but I dont have positive confirmation that the US Navy did it. But we keep finding rusted back Navy looking buttons.

I know for a fact, some companies manufactured cheaper iron backed buttons for the US Army during WWII.

The US Navy made an iron backed hat button that keeps showing up at CW era sites...but yours is post CW.

Just to be sure check your remaining back with a magnet.
