Hey Mainer,
It very well could be. I found a similar one that I thought was CW, but it turned out to be 1870's era. You'll need to get a good pic of the back mark. Someone will definitely ID it then. Cool find regardless.

HH!! :hello:

I found one that is somewhat like this, and it was spanish american war if I remember right. Which would make it about the time period you are talking.

Post the backmark, Mainer, and these guys can ID it.

That type of face was used from about 1850 to 1875. If you can post a pic of the back that would help narrow down a date. If the letters are raised and in a channel it is an 1850's period button.

No offense Mike I know I've said it before but I hate that site. It is way to general. It doesn't say anything about raised or stamped mark or anything about stars, dots. rings or things that will make a difference in the date of the mark. It also show some post civil war marks as civil war. Sorry about the rant but I just really hate that site. :angry5:

You sound like me, I get a little annoyed if detecting related sites are not as factual as possible (we all make mistakes), but if its adding fuel to the fire that some buttons are CW when they are not (& people believe this site, I know I did, looks convincing) then it just increases the level of mis-information. Which means that in the future people take it as the truth, as its grown larger than life.

AGREED! Without a doubt, that site is too general and has flaws. Cannot beat books for references, even though some of them have boo boos. :tongue3:

Thanks for all the replies. The backmark is raised, and says Waturbury Button CO. I know some of you dont like Mikes website he posted but acording to that it dates 1849-1965. Thats a pretty wide range. Hopfully someone else will be able to narrow it down. I can take a pic later if needed. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Mainer-Alberts Button Book shows that button on page 40, with the Waterbury Button Co backmark as

GI 94 General Service 2-piece RV-1

I believe it was put in service in 1854.

Thanks Keith. So more then likely could be civil war. Thanks again.

That type of backmark is called RMDC (Raised Mark Depressed Channel) Most of those backmarks date 1850s. There are a couple exceptions that go into the late 1800's. None will go into the 1900's though. Your button dates in the 1850's and that type is dug in civil war camps.
