Hello, I got permission to a new site. Its a field with soft soil so I did'nt have much trouble breaking throu the frost. I decided to search in all silver mode because of all the iron. I was hoping to pick some coins out of the iron soup. Second hole was the eagle button and the third was the medalet. Apparently they ran against Grant in the 1868 election. Seymore & Blair. Also a 1902 indianhead penny that I did'nt show. If anyone has a suggestion for a good button book I'd appreciate it. I want to catalog and date the ones I have. Good Hunting

Wow...... that is an unusually clean button. Unfortunately most we get out of the fields around here are pretty toasted. On a rare occasion you will get one with a good bit of the gold wash left but not often. The medal is in awesome shape as well. Great finds. Congrats:icon_thumleft:

those are both outstanding finds :icon_thumleft:

That medal is a beautiful find. Excellent condition, with a lot of gilding. Congrats on that. I'd take one of those ANY day!

Cheers,

Buck

I wish those guys would run again.

Awesome stuff there! I get jealous of the beautiful military buttons I see on here. Very little major military history here in Maine. Great job on those. Very very nice

Thanks for all the replys! I have to be honest, the button was caked in hardpack so I (very lightly!!!!) used my dremel and a very soft copper wheel on the back. I did'nt see any resulting damage so I tried it on the front. I've never touched any of my military buttons with anything other than a Qtip! But I was curious. I then coated it in olive oil. I've done that before with some civilian buttons to make out a hard to read backmark or to bring out a design and was amazed at the clarity the dremel brought out. I believe in leaving them as is but I was curious.

Two awesome finds. I love that medal. Very cool.
What part of Hoosierville do you live in?
Congrats,

I wish those guys would run again.
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, that's great, it's a shame even those guys could straighten out this mess!
