I found a very reasonably priced Sunray Stealth X-5 coil on eBay. The itch to try it out could not be resisted, thus it will soon hit my mailbox...

My E-Trac is completely stock, so I've not played add-ons with it yet. And I see advertisements for lower shafts.

My gut says I should also pick up a lower shaft for the new coil, mostly for convenience.

But, it this really mostly for convenience? Just attach a new shaft to the new coil and feed the cable through for a ready swap out, or does it get more complicated than that?

And, certainly with the new coil instead of the stock coil, is there anything I should be aware of?

Thanks for all input.....

Yes the lower rod just makes swaps MUCH easier and faster. What ya getting the x-5 for?

Yup, extra lower shafts makes life a lot easier. With the shaft, you can change out a coil in a couple of minutes. Without it might take 5-10. The time saved is in threading the cable through the shaft and getting the rubber washers and the bolt lined up to mount the coil. Keep in mind that Minelab doesn't supply any attaching hardware with a new lower shaft. Pretty short sighted and annoying IMO. You may find the readings (especially depth) are a bit off. Not a big deal though. You'll love that coil in trashy and/or iron infested sites.
