Hello all! I got a big fat gallon glad my today yard saling and didn't think much of it, but now I'm thinking it might be special. I read that article by,'Bottle Bill' about dating duraglas bottles and this one winds up in the odd ball questions to readers section at the end. I tried to email him, but his email is no longer active... So, I come to you. The portion of the mark meant to indicate the year, instead simply says 's'. Any ideas on the date and value of this bottle? I'll try to post pictures as well. Btw, the glass has a twisted design, it's brown glass, 1 gallon, script writing for Duraglas.

Hello Alexis,

Welcome to TNet & thanks for showing us your bottle.

I'm reading that "S" as an 8, or 9. Late Forties wine or vinegar jug. Might be collectible in another 50+ years, not so much nowadays.

You might watch this Antique C 1930'S Owens Illinois Glass Amber Swirl Bottle Large | eBay, though I would be most surprised if it sells.

Hi Surf, thanks so much! That bottle dies look just the same! However, it may be difficult to tell our see in the photo, but the 's' is distinctly an 's'. It's even like courier font with the little marks at the end of the tails.

Hey Alexis,

I see no serifs on any of those numbers. Are you talking about the number to the right of the Owens Illinois mark?

With the heavy stippling on the base, it's difficult to make out. After looking again, I now think it is a "3."

When you say 'Bottle Bill,' are you referring to Bill Lockhart?

Oh my gosh, we put a light in it to see and it's definitely an 8! so, must be a 48. Bottles are big right now, so it'll probably fetch $10 anyway. Not bad for a yard sale find. :-) Thank you!

Hey Alexis,

Through what venue? I see several on various electronic auction sites; misidentified, mis-dated, and with ridiculous asking prices. Undistinguished, mid-Century mass produced bottles seldom sell that well, in my experience. Hope you prove me wrong. 8-)

Well, I am very new to selling, so I could be easy wrong, we'll see. I'm going to try my hand at a flea market and at an antique show.
