Well, lady luck dealt me a cruel blow today. So I'm back at the cavalry site and I get a decent signal that sounds like a typical shotgun cap and has the same numbers. I hate those dumb things. You can't not dig them cuz they sound so good. So I dig down about seven inches and out comes a shield pendant of some sort. Heart starts racing...could it be??..an i.d. badge of some sort? I couldn't be that lucky, BUT some quality finds have come out of this site so far. I just had to know something right then and there. I took out my bottle water and toothbrush and gently cleaned the front a little. Post..ID?.., a little star in the middle revealed. Ok, Union..clean a little more..."HOLY CRAP..that does NOT say Detective at the top. It just can't. The whole word is not there because of the poor shape of the thing, but that definitely said Detective at one time. I thought, for that moment, and the rest of the day that I had just moved into the detecting elite. One of only a handful of people that have found a civil war detective badge. Alas....it was not to be.
When I got home, I cleaned it more thoroughly. Here's a link to what it was:

Needless to say, I haven't been that let down in a long time. That dumb thing had to be right in the middle of my cavalry camp. There is hardly any other trash around there and that had to pop up right there. Oh well, I'm sure those woods still hold a plate or two. I did manage to find my first intact spur which is on one of the videos. Its bent up but still a cool find. Also found another spencer, another colt repeating rifle round and some other round along with a round ball and two more parts of spencer cartridges.
I did manage to find another house site late in the day that I think is untouched. There should be some coins around there. That's where that silver thing came from along with the brass piece with figures on it doing Lord knows what. I also discovered that cool little cave late in the day but it was too small for me to go in more than six feet or so. Bummer,I love caves.
The day was gorgeous and I think I hiked up and down steep inclines and descents about 10 times. Had to be at least the equivalent of an Appalachian trail hiker for the day. Was in the woods for 9 hours total and it went by like it was three. I hate how time flies when you're detecting. I think I could go for 24 hours straight with enough daylight.
Oh yeah, check out the flattened bullet. It looks like someone was making a union shield out of it and didn't finish it. Pretty neat.
