I would like to know more about this tag. Is it a hotel tag? Any tricks to figuring out its origin?

There are a lot of places with the name Dunlap so I’m struggling to find a positive ID. There was a Dunlap House in Portland Ma that looks promising but no way to know for sure.....

You don't mention where you found it, which is often key to proper research.

Based on your profile location, I found a 1907 listing for a Dunlap House Hotel in Flint. No additional info, though.

Yeah, sorry. It was dug in the central Michigan area, Mount Pleasant to be exact.

You're right. LOTS of places called Dunlap House.

The most famous seems to be in Jacksonville, IL. Also found one in Montezuma, IN.

Here's an ad from an 1880 newspaper:

Saginaw St, Pontiac.

But I don't get the impression that your tag is that old...

Yeah, I know what you mean. It doesn’t have the same feel as a lot of the old tags I’ve seen. Most I’ve seen have had the words stamped into the tag. This tag was cast and is quite solid.

It was dug in the old part of part of town. Same strip of sidewalk tear-out produced 8 coins over a hundred years old and not much new stuff. It looks like it’s been in the ground for a long time. :dontknow:

Another thought is if it was a hotel tag there would have had to be a different mold for reach number. I found some online that are cast but the room number is still stamped into the tag.
