Never feel it's a dumb question if you don't know the answer. I always use headphones. Like Stoney56 says, it saves your battery life and you can hear the signals better. There are a lot of times that I would have missed targets without them because the tones can be very faint if it's deep. I also like them cause I hunt mostly at the beach, and can ignore, or pretend I don't hear people trying to stop me to ask the same questions!LOL
Most detector co. spend boocoo bucks to test and match headphones with their detectors so would recommend matching headphones. Buy the best you can afford otherwise like buying an $800 rifle then putting a $40 scope on it. Whichever headphones you get should have a mono/stereo switch and individual vol control.
Have to agree - any question that is asked is not dumb. To your question: Use my head phones all of the time. Blocks out surrounding noises, able to hear faint sounds and keeps folks away who as "what are you doing?".
No such thing as a dumb question. Headphones are a definite must!
For all the reasons that everyone mentioned.
Good luck huntin' and wear those phones!
I use headphones exclusively and have wondered about something. I have two sets of head phones and the both identify the one for the right and left ear. Problem is, if you wear them as marked your cord stretches across your body and often gets in the way. The engineers are either left handed or had the blueprints reversed! One set has the curley q cord and the other set has a straight cord. The curly one is definately better as it stays out of your way when digging. I have nearly severed the straight cord several times when it fell down into the hole I was digging.
I used to have the same problem until I switched detector hands. I now swing my detector with my left hand and dig with my right. It really doesn't matter which hand you use as long as you put the cord out of the head phones on the same side as the detector. They also make cheap clips to hold the chord to your shirt when you bend down. A clothes pin might work too.HH.
Jim, you will usually see me running with the cord down and under the armrest. Since the cord jack is on the right side then the cord side on headphones are on the right. Since the headphones are individual vol. it doesn't make any difference whether it's left/right. At some point I may try the wireless setup, till then no straight cord cause tree branches love them.
